Drive-by-wire refers to a system in which traditional mechanical and hydraulic controls in a vehicle are replaced by electronic controls. In self-driving vehicles, this technology allows for functions like steering, braking, and throttle control to be handled by computers through electronic signals rather than physical linkages.

How It Works

Instead of using direct mechanical connections (e.g., a steering column or brake lines), a drive-by-wire system sends electronic signals to actuators that control these critical vehicle functions. Sensors monitor input (such as turning the steering wheel or pressing the accelerator), which the vehicle's onboard computer processes to execute the desired action.

Drive-by-wire systems are crucial for autonomous vehicles because they allow the self-driving computer to control the car's movement with precision and speed.
